Cambourne was established on a greenfield site in 1997 and has enjoyed continuous building up to the present. It is a settlement based on three villages - Lower, Upper and Great Cambourne which will eventually have 4,250 homes and a population of around 13,000. The Developers are led by a quartet consortium of Bovis Homes, McAlpine, Bryant Homes and George Wimpey. There is a wide range of housing provision from Social-Landlord rent through Shared-Equity to houses for sale, some costing up to £500,000. Until the present downturn in the building industry, 300 houses a year were completed. At the moment work has slowed considerably and less than 60 homes have been finished since September 2008.
Cambourne was first conceived as having just 3,000 homes with a margin for expansion of 10%. The ceiling of 3,300 has been increased to an anticipated 4,250 if the new Planning Application for 950 houses in Upper Cambourne is approved. All the planning authorities are opposed to any further expansion beyond this figure.
Jeavons Wood Primary School opened in September 2009, ahead of schedule and on budget thanks to contractors Coulsons and Bovis Lend-Lease. The intended site is in Jeavon's Wood, always ear-marked for a School in rural, wooded and tranquil surroundings. The plans for the School are tailored to fit it around many of the mature trees with its playing area spilling-over into open ground. It is fair to say that the route to establishing the school in its new buildings in the Wood has not been straightforward and the Education Authority is still awaiting the agreement of the Developers of Cambourne so it can begin construction. In order that the School should open to serve its current waiting list of two reception classes and two infant classes, it will be fully contained in temporary buildings on an adjacent site within easy reach of Jeavon's Wood and sandwiched between the Bowling Green and the site for the Church.
